Keeping Children Safe While Accessing Educational Resources Online

The world has turned into a global village, thanks to the Internet. While the benefits of the Internet are immense, it poses a host of challenges, especially to children who might not be well informed on the best ways to remain safe and how to protect their privacy online.

World over, cybersecurity has been a big concern for individuals as well as governments. While everyone has a role to play in enhancing their safety in cyberspace, children are exposed to unique risks. The risks can be scary but below are some of the practical steps parents can take to keep their kids safe online.

Open Conversations

It is never too early to have a conversation on online safety with your little ones. Safety starts with an open communication. Let your children know they can talk to you about things they don’t like about being online, and their worries and concerns anytime they are in the digital space. Make them understand that they can’t withhold any information on things that don’t feel right when they are in that space.

Be the Student When Necessary

To learn what apps and programs your children get access to as well as the people they interact with online, ask them to teach you how some of them work. Be a little curious and have fun learning from them. Ask the right questions while at it.

Teach Them About Privacy Settings

While many apps and social media sites have their own privacy settings, children might not follow them accordingly. On the other hand, you might want to decide which apps your children get access to and the ones they can’t.

Have Discussions On Online Safety

Explain what online safety entails and some of the measures one can take to protect themselves online. Teach them how to identify bullying content and what to do once they come across such content. The world is cybercentric, do the best in protecting your children.
